Description: Sunday
Morning at Bethel is a reflection of my childhood memories of
going to Sunday school and church at the African Methodist Episcopal
(A.M.E.) Church where my father was the Sunday School Superintendent.
This was a community institution where people met to talk after
church, where singing unions were conducted, as well as Sunday
School conventions were held. In this structure, deaths were announced
by the tolling of the church bell and funerals took place. Most
people attended church and wore their "Sunday best" attire. Every
summer my father bought small parasols or umbrellas made in Japan
for my sisters and me. Perhaps this accounts for the little girl
under the tree with this item. Although not intentionally done,
the woman in the blue dress resembles my mother. |
