Description: Flitty is a work commissioned by an old friend from Arkansas who brought a photograph of this lovely young woman to me and asked me to paint it. According to his story, he was in the U.S. Army in Korea, when the woman wrote him a “Dear John” letter and married someone else. She had died recently and my friend wanted the woman's daughter to have the photo or some image of her. Whenever he spoke of the woman, he gave me the view that she was a beautiful person with a sassy attitude. As my mental image of her developed, I saw that she had gone away, and a veil separated her from those she cared for. She smilingly looks back, assuring everyone that everything is all right. The distant desert scene incorporated within the composition expresses my impression of a place different from our home state, Arkansas.
