Description: Whether it is called "stepping into a new world," "the Christening," or by another phrase, the naming of a child is an important matter. For many societies, the name bestowed upon a baby will affect how he or she is viewed within the community, and help determine the person the child becomes. There are groups who wait seven days to name a girl and nine days to name a boy. In the case of twins where there is a boy and girl, they would be named on the eighth day. I have witnessed African American, Ashanti, and Yoruba naming day ceremonies.
This work is a reflection of those events. The painting is rendered in an impressionistic manner. |
