Flitty is a work commissioned by an old friend from Arkansas who brought a photograph of this lovely young woman to me and asked me to paint it. According to his story, he was in the U.S. Army in Korea, when the woman wrote him a “Dear John” letter and married someone else. She had died recently and my friend wanted the woman's daughter to have the photo or some image of her. Whenever he spoke of the woman, he gave me the view that she was a beautiful person with a sassy attitude...

First Born, painted during the summer of 1980, was inspired by a situation I encountered when I went to spend the summer with my mother after the death of my father. The painting reflects a beautiful young woman who has just recently experienced motherhood for the first time. My niece and her husband had moved in with my mother a few months earlier, and soon afterwards their first child was born...

Sunday Morning at Bethel is a reflection of my childhood memories of going to Sunday school and church at the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church where my father was the Sunday School Superintendent. This was a community institution where people met to talk after church, where singing unions were conducted, as well as Sunday School conventions were held. In this structure, deaths were announced by the tolling of the church bell and funerals took place...
